Planning for France 2023 Trip

I’m using the Rick Steves Guide to Provence for recommendations on boutique hotels, B&Bs and gites (cottages) for the Spring 2023 journey to the south of France. Bonnieux and Chez Suzanne will be our base for seven nights during which we’ll have a rental car. The plan is to make day trips to small villages throughout the Luberon.

Gite in Provence

We’ll depend on trains and busses to get around (Marseille, Arles, Avignon, Lyon, Aix-en-Provence, Basel) during independent time before and between two organized tours: 1) VBT’s Switzerland, Germany & France: The Black Forest & the Alsace Wine Route, and 2) OAT’s French & Italian Rivieras: Marseille, Corsica, Elba & Rome.

April 30, 2023 – Continuing to walk 6.5 miles daily on the Katy Trail. Today I’ll attempt the walk with a backpack loaded with camera gear to hopefully build endurance. Yesterday was hiking boot day. While I did not develop blisters, my feet were sore. The stiffness and hard soles of the boots made the walk a chore. Double socks and Vaseline helped reduce the risk of blisters.

Aix-en-Provence – Three Nights

May 11, 2023 – Thursday Slept well and late – 9:00 AM – before seeking coffee and breakfast at Cafe Nino, 41 Cr Mirabeau. This huge boulevard was set up for an outdoor market with dozens of clothing vendors. We sat at outdoor cafe tables and ate pretty good eggs. The rest of the day…

Travel to France

May 9 – 10, 2023 The UBER driver was waiting in the driveway for us and five pieces of luggage – one of which is the 15 pound drone suitcase. Both VBT and OAT limit luggage to two items per passenger. We’ll see if tour leaders enforce the rules. My guess is that they’ll break…
